Construction of a new Science, Sustainability and Food Technology Centre.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project was for the construction of a new Science, Sustainability and Food Technology Centre at Mount St. Joseph Girls’ College.

The construction comprises a single storey building on concrete slab with multiple finishes, including render, brick veneer, timber cladding, timber feature posts, Alucobond and zinc cladding relieved with perforated screens.

Teaching spaces include five laboratories, food technology and collaborative learning spaces.

Sustainability features of the building include solar panels on the roof, water tanks installed around the building to harvest rain water, and rammed earth walls for heating.

A fully interactive weather station was also installed for students to monitor rainfall, wind and temperature.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

Multiple external finishes required consistent and continual co-ordination of trades to ensure the finished product was outstanding.

Design changes occurred throughout the construction phase as the teaching spaces and their intended uses evolved. These changes were all incorporated into the original program.
